Land, Being, Belonging: The Power of Coexistence in the Ever-Changing World
RISD Undergraduate Architecture Thesis 2025

“When we begin to open our eyes and see the world around us, we are able to contextualize ourselves within the larger interdependent system and recognize the power of coexistence.”

“As I slowly redefine my relationship with the various places, people, and spaces to call home, I think of the process of change. The transition from one place to another and the details in between. Mapping the large jumps between nations, states, or even streets, but acknowledging the key moments of the journey onward. Change is inevitable,
uncomfortable, and needed.”

Building with Nature: Wind Catcher Towers in La Campaña 2024

“Our collective goal is to acknowledge the possibilities of coexistence with natural building materials that foster mutual flourishing between human and non-human ecologies. Regenerating a world built on an economy of exchange rather than extraction, as climate crisis conditions demand we do.”

Indigenous Global Storytelling: Recollections from a Transracial Adoptee
Sophie’s Adapted Adoption Book 2024“When you’re adopted, you usually have a photo album, kind of like a baby book, but it is typically referred to as an adoption book because it documents the moment you were brought home. I have one with various photos from the moment I was legally adopted to being held by my birth-mother. Now, as a young adult, I can contribute my own perspective to these records and document the feelings I share in this moment and perhaps my desires for the future.”

	Future Architecting Polychrome Worlds

Philadelphia 2123: The City of Chosen Family

Safe spaces that derive from interdependence and community. I hope for a future where she does not have to justify her existence, or her resilience, but rather, embraces it. Acknowledge the growing pains and recognize the beauty of change. To grow up with the people I always needed and still do.

	The Post-Borderzone

Ecosystems Know No Borders: Reimaging Regeneration Through Transboundary Co-Existence

The borderlands must be recognized as multidimensional, multifunctional, and multifaceted landscapes that are home to various beings. From migrant workers who raise their families across the border zone to the group of Lechuguillas you see driving on Highway 85, the borderlands are temporary for some and permanent for many.

Land, Being, Belonging: The Power of Coexistence in the Ever-Changing World

Awarded the 2025 RISD ArchitectureUndergraduate Thesis Prize
Seeking community is a desire embedded in all of us. We long for spaces of expression, mutuality, respect, and authenticity. “Standard” design practices based on expansion, extraction, and linearity have only propelled our desire for community as we lose sight of each other. Even in a world built on division, isolation, and rejection, historically marginalized community members continue to seek one another out time and time again.

1. Master Plan Collective
Community-based efforts are at the forefront of environmental, social, and economic justice movements that are all interconnected within larger systemic structures. Indigenous Peoples around the world persist in navigating the ever-changing world through practices, philosophies, and relationships rooted in reciprocity with the land, non-human beings, and each other. The abundance of knowledge sharing, storytelling, and collective care Indigenous Peoples continue to remedy within colonial structures of violence, oppression, and injustice is indicative of resistance movements everywhere.

Paying homage to 2SLGBTQIA+ HOUSE cultures formed in response to Western exclusionary practices, this thesis proposes a new housing typology as a dynamic, living entity that embodies a sense of belonging for all beings, both human and non-human. It offers endless adaptable possibilities that change over time, seasonally, and with the communities that inhabit it at various moments. The project offers an architectural practice expressing gratitude to the land and enabling us to foster a world built on mutual responsibility, participation, and exchange within the collective power of coexistence.

The ways in which we engage, interact, and cultivate community have the potential to inspire our immediate movement(s) and expand beyond a culture of damaged into a culture of desire. We often have to ask where do we begin to address circumstances that often stem from a root of violence, but we must determine what we would like ourselves to become. Even in the moments of uncertainty, conflict, and contradiction, we still have the power to influence the desired outcomes if we work collaboratively.

“This is why it is useful to see love as a practice. We learn to communicate, to be still and listen to the needs of our hearts, and we learn to listen to others. We learn compassion by being willing to hear the pain, as well as the joy, of those we love” - bell hooks
All of us, human and non-human, have a role, responsibility, and obligation to one another. These responsibilities depend on what you are able to handle at various moments of life, and new circumstances impact the ways in which we will respond.
When we begin to open our eyes and see the world around us, we are able to contextualize ourselves within the larger interdependent system and recognize the power of coexistence.

“These things hold story and memory, responsibility and care. They remind me of people and places, ceremonies and obligations I am only beginning to understand…You look at them and see memory and history, connection and relationship. The items in our bundles have ancestors too: they have stories to tell us about the lives they led before they arrived in our hands. These things that are precious to us connect us to relatives and histories, to memories and stories unspoken and relatives we may or may not wish to claim. When I say return to yourself and pick up your bundle, I am asking you to look at those things with new eyes. Listen to their history and remember your relationship and obligations” -Patty Krawec

Land, Being, Belonging Probe

This work is real, not speculative. I am one of many navigating colonial systems of violence, oppression, and injustice through resistance and resilience efforts. It is important to me not only to share my lived experiences that shape these approaches, but also all those who came before me who have shaped this body of work. Each item, object, and being on this shelf holds meaning, stories, and a connection to a larger narrative. I hope that you will stop to take a look and listen.

Building with Nature: Wind Catcher Towers in La Campaña

I write to you as the descendant of the Tacuate people in the mountain ranges of Oaxaca, Mexico, and as a result of forced transnational migration. The original inhabitants of the colonized state of Nuevo León include the Alazapas in the northern region, the Guachichiles in the southern region, the Borarados and Tamaulipec groups in the eastern region, and the Coahuiltecans in the western region. The city of Monterrey occupies the Native land of the Alazapas, Guachichiles, Borarados, Tamaulipec, Coachuiltecan, and countless other Indigenous populations that have been forcibly displaced from their traditional lands during Spanish colonization. We must acknowledge that the project we are pursuing is in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples who continue to protect and preserve the land in which we reside.

In recent years, extreme seasonal conditions have become more frequent as infrastructure, political, and social systems struggle to combat drastic temperatures, weather, public health, and cultural shifts. Extreme seasonal conditions such as increased temperatures, extensive droughts, and excessive flooding continue to put inhabitants at risk and add pressure to their way of living. In 2023, there was an excessively long drought that caused 116 people to die from heat-related deaths. With growing death tolls and increased water scarcity, addressing the conditions of climate change has never been so imperative.

Our collective goal is to acknowledge the possibilities of coexistence with natural building materials that foster mutual flourishing between human and non-human ecologies. Regenerating a world built on an economy of exchange rather than extraction, as climate crisis conditions demand we do. We are especially interested in working with regenerative earth-building materials that traditionally stem from indigenous and native communities around the world. Specifically focusing on collaboration with earth-building materials such as adobe to support a mutually productive relationship between all inhabitants of the region. We are interested in emphasizing the regenerative and resilient nature of the adobe brick and generating outcomes that recognize the physical and spiritual elements of co-existence. We want to reinforce teaching from traditional knowledge systems to build toward a more sustainable and just future.

Our implementation strategy stems from the traditional knowledge of wind catcher designs and the passive energy that can be harnessed through an earth-built tower. We began by focusing on passive wind energy as a form of regenerative cooling to be implemented in private dwellings, open-air public spaces, and ecological structures. We soon discovered the regenerative material of adobe could act as a filter to absorb CO2 emissions as well as filter other pollutants from the air, like sickness. These material qualities coincide with the change in temperature and seasonal patterns as natural passive energy systems work in parallel to one another. In other words, if seasons shift throughout the year, so does one’s ability to harness passive energy. We must consider the larger natural systems that work collaboratively throughout seasonal shifts.

Continuing our research revealed the abundance of knowledge of adobe as it inherently functions with ecosystems to filter, preserve, and carry nutrients to other beings. Adobe is an excellent regenerative material that can be found around the world and harnessed right in our backyards. The filtration process can be applied to air quality as well as water, depending on the variation of clay production. In other words, we must consider the needs and conditions of earth materials concerning the needs of the communities we are implementing our design strategy.

Philadelphia 2123: The City of Chosen Family

An Ode to the Places I Call Home
I wonder about the places I call home as if the answer changes depending on the circumstances. The Wawa will travel from 2,000 to 3,000 miles during the winter if they cannot find open water and eventually return to their birthplace in the spring. For years I have reconciled with seeking shelter in spaces without open water. Wedging my way into crevices that I do not belong and squeezing myself into unfamiliar forms. Sauntering about until I collided with the dirt beneath me. Back into the almond-shaped seedling with rigid edges and deep roots that grounded me into the earth. When I think of the place where I grew up, I think of my family of four: my mother, father, brother, and me. Our home is based on the outskirts of the city just above a small river town that possesses familiarity around each corner. A thoughtful place to raise a family with the shared goal of keeping us safe and secure. Tucked away in single-family homes and McMansions that have been copy-pasted over and over again. Our home is no different from the rest, but somehow holds all of my childhood memories and beyond. I was brought here a week after I was born across the river in Trenton, New Jersey. An ironic juxtaposition to the life that was to become my reality. A life given to me as the byproduct of displacement and the result of mass migration into unfamiliar territory and unknown landscapes. And for this, I should be grateful. Safe and protected by a population that could never truly accept me.
When I think of the place where I come from, I think of my ancestral homeland thousands of miles south of a blurred line drawn in the sand. Wedged between mountain ranges and covered by a layer of fog. My birth mother was born here, in a small remote village high above the city of Oaxaca. Once a place I could only dream of through the memories of my birth mother and the tokens of culture passed down to me for special occasions. Now a place I have experienced on my own. I think of stepping off a plane with a passport that unlocked the barrier between me and a journey back home. The guilt associated with experiencing a place where she could not return. To be a stranger amongst faces that resembled mine and for the first time in my life transform a dream into reality. A place to call home that I have never lived in. A place to call home through heritage, culture, and community. A place for me and my half-sisters to contrast our existences in the states.
I dream of a place for my daughter to call home without hesitation. Fostered by a collective of heterogeneous individuals that come together as a chosen family. A world with the queer urge to grieve through expressions of joy and to care for the collective. Safe spaces that derive from interdependence and community. I hope for a future where she does not have to justify her existence, or her resilience but rather, embraces it. Acknowledge the growing pains and recognize the beauty of change. To grow up with the people I always needed and still do.

A place the Lenni Lenape Nation refers to as Shackamaxon or “place of the council”. They spend time roaming the plush field of grass and wildflowers that lead to the edge of the water. Behind the tall reeds in the water, you’ll find nests with eggs with caregivers close by. They travel back every spring to find newly built structures that always remember their existence. Newly built rooftops with wild produce grown along the city skyline await their return as they stop to rest or refuel on their journey. They have grown to co-exist with humans. There was once a time when they’d chase someone for holding a hoagie too close to their young. Ever since the city disbanded the use of automobiles within community centers, the Wawa have begun to gather again. Even with the increased severe storms and harsh winds the Wawa continue to migrate. This might be due to the dissipating pollution or lack of black smoke emulating the night sky. But we know that if they are to continue to come to Philadelphia, we must choose to support the Wawa throughout their journey back home. Whether that be from the coastline of Schackamaxon or the Northern tip of Mexico, they will always have a home here.

Itzel & Yatzil Itzel carried Yatzil on her back when she crossed over a month ago. Yatzil was only six months old when they made the journey to Philadelphia. A new place to call their home, in a new county, and with a new life. They arrived on a SEPTA bus that carried them from one end of the city to the other. Even so, they realized that although convenient, SEPTA was only necessary when traveling outside the community centers. This meant that they could walk to their first destination inside the community center. The city was overrun by new housing and with the open border policies welcoming immigrants, migrants, and refugees, Iztel and Yatzil were housed within the first week of being in Philly. A small one-bedroom apartment would become their home in the months to follow. Itzel picked out a pastel pink to cover the walls of the bedroom she and her daughter shared. It reminded them of their village in Oaxaca. Except the whole city somewhat reminded them of home. Similar vibrant colors lineaged across each facade of the surrounding buildings. Each a different color. It was interesting to see a community of color inside a community of color. Itzel was confident in their ability to adjust to this new space and hopeful for the new friends and family they were bound to meet.

Luna & Sol Luna and Sol met during their freshman year at university. Both attended two different Public Philadelphia Schools but ended up studying at the University of the Arts at the same time. Sol was a fine arts major while Luna studied design. Their work focused on similar subject matters but always was produced differently. Even with differing schedules and studio spaces on other sides of the community, Luna and Sol always spent their nights together. They shared their first kiss on top of an empty rooftop construction site beneath the stars. They had never done that before, let alone had partners before one another. They spent the whole night talking to each other until the sun came up. Once the construction workers began to pour in, they needed to run for it. Back in the studio, Sol focused on a new painting series highlighting queer Indigenous partnerships. It wasn’t something out of the ordinary in this day and age, but it was something extraordinary to them. Luna focused on designing a studio space that could merge fine artists with designers. Her excuse was that her initiative design would draw the university community together, but she wanted to be closer to Sol if she could.

Ecosystems Know No Borders: Reimaging Regeneration Through Transboundary Co-Existence

The Mexico - U.S. Border has become defined through the politics of spatial separation between nations, disconnected infrastructures, and the avaricious ambitions that settler colonialism has implored. The desert region continues to be portrayed as empty space ready to be occupied, exploited, extracted, and polluted as a result of the sovereign. The ramifications of these predatory actions are evident across the borderlands as the exploitative practices consider profit over preservation. These narratives are manufactured by the combination of competing state and economic interests with the material extraction of the uninhabitable desert region. Human intervention is determined through ownership, property, and control as strategies are limited by practicality rather than possibility. Even so, it is not impossible to reimagine human intervention through contrasting theories of knowledge or to consider the land by way of connection rather than separation.

From migrant workers that raise their families across the borderzone to the group of Lechuguillas you see driving on Highway 85, the borderlands are temporary for some and

permanent

for many. These systems exist collectively as they overlap, intertwine, join, and neighbor one another. Co-existence is the very basis of the borderlands as a landscape. However, as human intervention increases in these desert regions, co-dependence begins to infiltrate the natural balance of the environment. Lines have been drawn on the ground for ownership, property, and claim over land. Capital gain has rendered the borderlands profitable by means of extraction rather than exchange. Developing an intervention that denies these claims of ownership strengthens the natural order of coexisting ecosystems. The circle of life will continue to progress regardless of human intervention as long as these systems are restored.

Many of the ancestors and descendants of Smeltertown are in their final resting spot in the abandoned historic cemetery. Even so, the memories, legacy, and story of Smeltertown remain passed down to the next generation. Children of Smeltertown that are now adults remember the tight-knit community that served as a supportive environment through culture, ethics, and aspirations. Although portions of Smeltertown's history have been lost to time, the lasting impact of this community remains within the individuals who share these experiences. That is to say, these stories are worth documenting and preserving for both the community and to share the continuous power dynamics within the ownership of land. Land back centers on the inherent right to sovereignty and self-determination of indigenous beings, communities, and collectives. The erasure of indigeneity in Western ideology has ensured these practices are lost to time. Land that settler colonialism occupies continues to reinforce the injustices, displacement, and dispossession of Indigenous lands.
To consider a shift in the power dynamic is to reimagine the potential futures that could result. These futures have the ethics for coexistence and the possibility of regenerative fundamentals. Land return can address the social, economic, and environmental crises that have occurred due to occupation. These issues are not confined within themselves. The borderlands consistently encounter the occupational hierarchy as the region has been divided by ownership. The holistic approach of Indigenous beliefs and ethics emphasizes the importance of coexistence as all beings play equal parts in the larger system. These ecosystems rely on the niche groups of beings that support the larger community through participation. Nature persists on the basis of interaction between various species and life forms. From the mountains to the plants in the ground, these characters shaped the landscape to be full of life.
